This podcast is an excerpt from Dr. Robin Murphy, ND's "Twelve Cell Salts" Lecture CD Set. Dr. Murphy briefly introduces some history about Dr. Schuessler's (Wilhelm Heinrich Schüßler) cell salts and homeopathy then continues with the philosophy of prescribing the cell salts.
Twelve Cell Salts:
The history and clinical uses of the twelve cell salts. How to prescribe the cell salts as constitutional remedies and mineral tonics. Homeopathy and the tissue remedies. Diet, health and nutritional topics are also covered. The various cell salts and herbal remedies used in combination are reviewed along with a presentation of biochemic materia medica of Calc-f., Calc-p., Calc-s., Ferr-p., Kali-m., Kali-p., Kali-s., Mag-p., Nat-m., Nat-p., Nat-s., and Silica.

There's more than twelve tissue cells and these are kind of randomly picked, not at random, but Schuessler actually at the end of his life, he threw out one and he only had eleven, but no one paid attention to him. They kept him at twelve. And actually, there's many trace minerals in the body and major minerals in the body and even trace metals. So, I use all the minerals and metals and elements – it can be used as tissue salts. Tissue salts is a way of prescribing versus the actual twelve remedies. It's a way of using homeopathic remedies. Many ways of using homeopathic remedies. Law similar is just one way. This started with Dr. Schuessler, I think it’s Oldenburg, Germany, 1873 I think he produced his first book. It was an abridged version of homeopathy. So, he was a German doctor and he was so upset that there were so many remedies and he had to buy all these books. Allen's was twelve volumes. Herrings was a ten-volume materia medica and it was overwhelming. Like Bach after him, they wanted to simplify homeopathy and get it out to the masses.
So, the tissue salt theory and all that actually started with Hahnemann. And Hahnemann and Herring and that – even back far as 1832, there was articles talking about what they called physiological remedies. Physiological remedies mean remedies made from components of the blood or the body or organs. Cell salts connect with every aspect of homeopathy. Sarcodes are also physiological remedies. Sarcodes are actually ovaries thyroid and all this. So, we find people on low thyroid, thyroid 3X, 6X used as if it's a tissue salt. Works great for a tonic for that thyroid. Okay? Ovaries, a woman has had her ovaries removed or menopausal and hot flashes, sometimes we give Ovaries 3X or 6X to tonify that area or help regulate the hormones and things. So, it goes on and on. And all the blood minerals can also be used as physiological remedies.
Physiological means the similarity principle means sodium, the natrums, nat-mur, nat-sulph, nat-phos, are physiologically active in the cellular metabolism and functions. So homeopathically, if someone has a sodium problem, you can give them sodium. [If] someone has a calcium problem, you can give them. The first thing you want to know about the tissue salts, it has nothing to do with deficiencies. Okay. Now the majority of books, 89% of books talk about it, that the person is deficient in this cell salt. We are not using a cell salt like a vitamin or a mineral to say that, in every case I present or talk to you about often has a deficiency. We do not care if the mineral is in excess or in deficiency. It's irrelevant to us. Someone can have too much calcium or too little calcium, they most likely will benefit from a calcium tissue salt or mineral remedy in low potency. Okay. So, if you get that idea – now, the original books, Boericke and Dewey’s is probably the best book and I think you can get that as a repertory. In it, they talk about the disturbance of the motion of those mineral molecules. Big difference in concept. So, a lot of people use these as if they're actual supplements. But I tell you, every case I've ever given that had iron deficiency anemia, and I gave ferrum phos or ferrum met, it all worked without them taking the iron supplement. I've also seen people have bone spurs and calcium deposits and I give them calcium tissue salts and that works. So, if you get that idea that this is supposed to, I don't like the word balance so much, but it reestablishes the mineral equilibrium of those minerals. We're not providing or even attempting to provide. The math is really interesting on this stuff.
So, what’s particular or peculiar about the cell salts is how they're given and how they're prescribed. So, from my experience of doing homeopathy for years, I find that the potencies act on different levels of the human being. Or they can be prescribed in different ways. And I find that as the potencies go up, say you have 10M up here or 50M potency and down here you have 3X, it's probably the lowest potency, actually 1X but 3X is the lowest most people legally sell, now, we find that when you're down in here below 30X or even 12C or something like that, that remedies given in low potency over long periods of time have a tonic effect. And a tonic effect means they have a wide range of action. And they tonify the body, the liver, to lungs, the bones, the tissues and all this. And make the person better in general without it being a similar specific remedy for that person. So, in the cell salt theory it’s the physiological affinity that we're prescribing it on, not on the symptom similarity as in classical homeopathy.
Now, I started in the early 70s, I started with tissue salts. Cell salts and herbal tinctures is how I started practicing. I started getting results and I went to naturopathic school and all this stuff. And to this day, I still use tissue salts and herbal tinctures, especially in combination or together. And you can do remarkable results with that. As you go up in potency, you have to be more specific to get that remedy to work. 200 Arnica works because it's broad range and any trauma or shock and all that. But 200 Ignatia, the person needs to be in an ignatia state for it to work. The cell salts do not require these types of criteria. Okay? We're using them, not as – that's just called therapeutics up here, so, therapeutics means you have to carefully take the whole case, match the symptoms, the better you match it, the deeper it works, the more profound, the quicker the therapeutic reaction or cure is. A tonic reaction using homeopathic remedies as a tonic means you give them lower potency and you're just stimulating the blood or the tissues or organs over a long period of time, whether that's similar to their case or not. you're working on physiological affinities so a little different in philosophy. And that's why these are very excellent remedies, especially for children growing up, for the elderly, for athletes, people under a lot of stress. Basically, everybody. Okay? And you don't have to be that particular. Another difference with the cell salts is that they would seem to work very well in combinations. So, they combine easily together because they're lower potencies and you can get new tonics. So, the cell salt system to me is a system of mineral tonics versus the similar remedy to cure the whole person. Their physiological remedies to balance out blood and tissues and all this stuff.
