Lotus Health Institute

Dr. Robin Murphy explores why having more information does not necessarily make someone a better homeopathic prescriber. Drawing on his studies in the University of Michigan’s extensive homeopathic archives, he explains how conflicting theories, random study, and an overemphasis on collecting symptoms can obscure what actually needs to be treated. Through practical examples, he argues that the patient is the ultimate teacher, acute obstacles must often be addressed first, and understanding the cause and active state of a condition can be more valuable than relying on the totality of symptoms alone.

Homeopathy and Children's Health CareThis podcast is an excerpt from the Children’s Health Care lecture by Dr. Robin Murphy, ND. Dr. Murphy’s Children’s Health Care course provides a focused overview of homeopathic approaches to pediatric and childhood cases. The lectures cover both common acute complaints and broader constitutional patterns that may appear throughout childhood. The course explores acute childhood complaints such as colds, coughs, fevers, teething, digestive upset, and recurring infections. It also covers respiratory conditions including croup, bronchitis, asthma patterns, whooping cough, and chronic cough tendencies. Additional topics include skin conditions, emotional patterns, fears, grief, anxiety, sleep issues, developmental concerns, inherited tendencies, miasms, vaccination considerations, and constitutional case-taking.

So there is a lot of information in homeopathy. I would say too much. There’s not too much, but there are over 5,000 books written. I studied homeopathy in Michigan. University of Michigan has all of the old homeopathic books and all the hospital records, they’re all up in the North Campus Library. I used go there and pull out these long drawers. I would come out solid brown with dust, the drawers hadn’t been opened for 30 years, literally. All these old books on everything. There are books on headaches with charts, we found some of these, I have some of the charts, with little arrows with all the remedies that show all the pains, like sanguinaria comes here, and goes over here, or lac caninum here, with an arrow. There is a lot of lost knowledge in homeopathy. But this information is also a detriment because we go in at random and study it at random. We get filled with conflicting views about everything. Everything in homeopathy has its opposite. Why? Because the individual patient that you see, you may give a one dose of 200 and see a remarkable cure with someone that has migraine headaches. The next time you see a migraine headache, you give the one dose of 200 and you see a remarkable aggravation. There is nothing consistent. The reason is that human nature is not consistent. Once you get that into your mind, you will be a much more flexible and open in homeopathy and then you’ll find the ultimate teacher in homeopathy, which is who? Who is the ultimate teacher in homeopathy? The patient. The patient can even contradict your experience.

We talk about the vital force. The theories of homeopathy are very similar to Tai Chi and Aikido, and a lot of the Eastern mentalities. If you kinda use those theories and philosophies when treating someone, you can get a lot better results. The vital force is your only teacher, and it’s your only teacher for that person. We get general principles from learning, but when someone comes in, the vital force has symptoms being expressed from it. It’s in a certain state, a state or disease, and that expresses various symptoms.

Another myth in homeopathy is that the totality of symptoms will cure. That’s a shocking one, right? Why do we say it’s a myth? Because you can type in every symptom they have into a computer, push the button, and it will tell you the remedy to give and you give the remedy and it won’t work. Believe me, I’ve tried it. It won’t work. It will work depending on your knowledge to type the symptoms in and hierarchy of symptoms and some other things we’ll talk about. But the totality of symptoms does not lead to the remedy.

So, then there are many, many homeopaths that think the more symptoms you get, the better prescriber you are. You take 2-3 hour cases. A child comes in with a sore throat and you’ve taken their whole life history, their parents, their grandparents, everything that has happened to them and you end up prescribing on a vaccination and the child has a sore throat. The vital force is in a state or a disease, if they are in a sore throat state, or disease, you have to threat the sore throat. We’ve learned from experience that the vital force will refocus on these acute problems and they have to be removed first. Hahnemann talks about it over and over again. Obstacles to the cure.

I’ve seen people, they’re a perfect sepia, sepia mentally, emotionally, physically, it fits all the materia medicas. You give sepia and it doesn’t work. Something’s wrong with our philosophy or something. It’s supposed to work. Then you give it in different potencies trying to make it work and it doesn’t work. Then they bring the case to me and I say, “give rhus tox..” They say what do you mean rhus tox? There’s not one rhus tox symptom here. Yeah, but she came in for a backache, and it’s stiff, better motion, give rhus tox. So I give rhus tox and the backache gets better, their energy is better, they feel better in general. Then a month or so later, you give sepia and it works. It’s not the totality of symptoms. Make a little thing here; etiology overrules totality of symptoms. You tune into etiology of the problem. Why is that child sick? We’re going to go through many hidden and known causes. Why is that child autistic? Why does he have these diseases? If you know that, you have transcended the need for all the little symptoms. That is the jungle that people get caught up in. All the little philosophies and all the little symptoms. You go in there and get totally lost. You know a lot of homeopathy but you don’t know the practical aspects of it.
